Interested in adopting?

We could not be more thrilled! The adoption of a pet is a wonderful and exciting event.

Before you decide to bring a new addition into your family, please ask yourself some very important questions:

  • Will my lifestyle allow enough time for a pet?

  • Am I willing to make a commitment to a pet for his entire lifetime (approximately 15 years)?

  • Am I willing to devote the time and patience that is required to help a pet adjust to a new home?

  • What will I do with my pet when I travel or move or have children?

  • Am I prepared for the additional expense that pet ownership involves? A dog can cost from $500 to $1,000 to feed and care for each year. A cat can cost from $400 to $600 to feed and care for yearly.

Once these questions have been answered it is time to move forward with your decision...

The LA/SPCA pet adoption process requires an investment of your time. Be prepared to spend about two hours selecting and adopting an animal that will be sharing his life with you. The process usually involves more than one trip to the shelter. All puppies, kittens, dogs and cats must be spayed or neutered before going home.

ADOPTION HOURS:

Seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ADOPTION STEPS:

  • The LA/SPCA Adopter Survey. The client care staff will have you fill out a simple survey that you answer on how you envision an animal in your home. This survey will help you find the best match from all the animals at the Louisiana SPCA waiting for adoption.

  • You are then welcome to visit with the dogs and cats in our adoption areas.

  • If you find a pet that you are interested in adopting our volunteers and client care staff will be happy to tell you what information is known about the animal.

  • We will then review with you your Adopter Survey, and make sure the situation is best for the animal and you. Once the adoption has been approved, you pay the adoption fee and if the animal is already spayed or neutered then you can take your new friend home. If the animal has not yet been sterilized then the animal will remain at the shelter until that procedure can take place.

Our adoption policies are designed to bring the best interest of the animal and the human together. Since each adoption is different, these policies help us do our part in ensuring that the adoption will be a lasting one and not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem.

  • All animals that are adopted from the LA/SPCA must be spayed or neutered.

  • We work with you to find the right match for your household. We reserve the right to deny an adoption if we feel it is not in the animal’s best interest.

  • We perform yard checks for some animals.

  • The primary caregiver must be present.

  • A 14-day health guarantee accompanies all adoptions.

  • Cats cannot be de-clawed following adoption.
