THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM

One of the most difficult things to experience if you’re part of the adoption team at the Louisiana SPCA is seeing an animal returned after being adopted. When it happens a second time your heart literally sinks. This was the case with a beautiful, black cat named Billy. Billy who had been with the LA/SPCA since December 2006 was still looking for a home when he was adopted in January. The next day, Billy was returned by the adopters who felt they couldn’t handle his energy. A few days later, Billy found his second home, but again it was short-lived. He was returned this time because the new owner realized they had allergies to cats.

Enter the Louisiana SPCA offsite adoption team. Along with onsite adoptions, the LA/SPCA has a cadre of volunteers who give up their time a couple of Saturdays a month to take adoptable animals out into the community, increasing their chances of finding a home.

Normally cats don’t journey to these events unless there’s a dedicated “cat team” to handle the unique needs of taking cats offsite for events. But on a recent Saturday, Billy, along with many other animals, was taken to Clearview Mall and that day turned out to be the “third time’s the charm” moment for Billy.

Anne Rogers’ 16-year-old son, Chase, had recently lost his cat to a sudden illness and he was ready to have the family bring a new cat into their home. As soon as they saw Billy they fell in love with him. Realizing the name "Billy" didn’t quite fit this beautiful new addition to the family, Chase quickly christened him with a new name – Ziggy.

Ziggy has not only found a home with Anne and her family, but he also has a wonderful “zoo” of family members to keep him company. There’s Sedar, the Golden Retriever; Cocoa, the Collie, Kit, a nine-year-old cat, two parakeets and a turtle. Anne tells us that Sedar even enjoys curling up with Ziggy and they’re on the road to a long friendship.

The Rogers couldn’t be happier with Ziggy. “He’s very high energy and we absolutely love it and it really works for everyone,” says Anne. Congratulations to Ziggy for finding the special family just for him.
