PRESS RELEASE

Second Arrest in Two Weeks for Cruelty

NEW ORLEANS (8/05/05) – It pays to be in the right place at the right time. While stopping to check on a problem with their truck, two Humane Officers noticed a man walking an emaciated pit bull. The man, Jamerson Johnson, 1626 Touro Street, could not offer identification and told the officers that he was walking the dog to the veterinarian. Mr. Johnson could not remember the doctor’s name. The dog was impounded pending a health evaluation.

When Humane Officers arrived at the home address, they saw two more dogs in poor health, chained to one another and a fence. The owner said he wanted the dogs to mate, which is why he chained them together.

Mr. Johnson was arrested by NOPD and charged with 3 counts of animal cruelty. The three dogs are being held at the LA/SPCA. The highly emaciated dog is laying on a stack of blankets and is seen in the photo below. The other two dogs have a skin condition, are thin, and have puncture-type wounds on their bodies. Two of the three dogs are seen below.

The Louisiana SPCA, a private non-profit organization chartered for the state of Louisiana in 1888, is dedicated to ending animal cruelty, eliminating animal overpopulation, providing quality low-cost veterinary care, and promoting the human and animal bond.
