Meet Esme: A Beautiful, Confident Lady
Looking for a Second Chance in a New Home, Once Again

NEW ORLEANS, LA (07/11/08) – Every animal that comes to the Louisiana SPCA has a story – stories that run the gamut. There are stories of sadness, joy, hope, loss, rescue, and hopefully for all, a second chance at a better life filled with human companionship that will last their lifetime. One very touching story is that of Esme.

For Esme, a 4-year-old beautiful Husky mix, who arrived at the LA/SPCA shelter on Monday, she is looking for yet another shot at a second chance. When Esme was brought to the shelter earlier this week, she was no stranger to LA/SPCA staff and volunteers. Esme had been adopted from the LA/SPCA last year, but sadly, her family returned her to the shelter this week due to having a new baby in the family suffering from allergies.

For a sweet companion like Esme who has experienced life in a home with a family you can only imagine her confusion and sense of loss at being in a shelter once again. Esme originally arrived at the LA/SPCA's in March 2007, when the shelter was still operating out of a temporary shelter, a converted coffee warehouse on Thayer Street. In fact, Esme was one of the resident canines who second-lined into the brand new facility in May 2007.

During her initial stay at the LA/SPCA, Esme stole the hearts of staff and volunteers. She was also successfully treated and cured of heartworm disease. Helen Hester, one of our dedicated volunteers, who saw first hand her wonderful qualities, also fostered Esme during her heartworm treatment prior to her adoption last year.

As Helen describes her, "Esme has an elegant husky face, a stocky body, and a blonde cowlick by her right shoulder. She loves to be serenaded and her favorite song is ‘Es-May, Ess-eh-may mucho.’ Indoors she loves to share a sofa, cuddling with her human anywhere she can -- the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and hall. Outdoors she loves to share a park bench cuddling with her human, watching the squirrels run, jumping up, romping, and back to cuddles on the park bench.”

Esme is extremely well rounded, and besides being very comfortable with snuggles and cuddles, she also knows her commands including shake and sit. Helen adds that she is a joy to take out on strolls as she, “walks like a lady on her leash.” Esme will do better in a home without cats, but beyond that, she will flourish in a home environment with either a family or single person, where she receives love, companionship, and interaction.

If you would like to meet the beautiful Esme, her animal ID number is 447753, and she will be available for adoption this Saturday from 11am-3pm at Jefferson, Feed, Pet & Garden Center, 4421 Jefferson Highway.

UPDATE: Thanks to the wonderful response from those who read about Esme in Tail Talk, the beautiful husky-mix was adopted to a new family. If there is such a thing as a happy ending at an animal shelter, Esme's new adoption certainly is that indeed. We wish Esme and her new family a lifelong friendship. We know she'll bring joy and unconditional love to their lives each and everyday.
