Algiers Man Arrested for Cruelty - Horses

NEW ORLEANS (2/25/07) – Last night, Dave Williams, 11514 Willow Drive (Algiers), was arrested by NOPD on two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals for two dead decomposing horses and five counts of simple cruelty for five emaciated horses.

Last night as well as today, Louisiana SPCA officers are on-the-scene documenting the condition of all animals on the property and contacting known owners to make alternative arrangements for their horses. People who may have horses on the property are being asked to call the LA/SPCA at 504-368-5191, ext 100.

Williams owns the property and boards horses for several people. Out of the 32 horses, only a handful appeared to be in good condition. The healthy horses were being fed and cared for by their owner whereas the other horses were cared for by Mr. Williams.

Horses did not have access to water, food, or hay. One water trough existed with ¼ inch moldy water lining its bottom. The pastures are inches thick with mud and most  of those living in barns were in filthy stalls.

Feed bags remained unopened except by the mice who tore through the paper bag. Mardi Gras trinkets and beer cans were strewn about a new horse trailer recently purchased by one of the owners. The owner was not aware of her horses poor condition nor that one had died at least a week ago.

Also on the property are 14 mules owned by Rolling Twenties Carriage Rides, four goats, and five dogs. Rolling Twenties, whose mules were in good condition, is arranging to move its animals to another location.

Five horses who were in poor condition were surrendered by their owner to the Louisiana SPCA, who is transferring ownership to the Rescue Ranch, a local equine rescue organization. The Rescue Ranch is on the scene and is assisting the LA/SPCA in assessing the horses’ condition.

Update (3/8/07):

The horses are located at three different barns.

  • Nineteen are being cared for by Rescue Ranch

  • Seven horses are at an undisclosed location.
They have waived the boarding fees

  • Seven horses are at a barn where the
Louisiana SPCA is assuming the costs - $700 a month

The assistance needed is twofold:

  1. The LA/SPCA is providing (and paying for) all veterinary care for all 33 horses. We need monetary donations to pay vets and the boarding for the 7 horses. Vet care is extensive. A horse is about to foal. Donations can be made online at www.la-spca.org or by utilizing the below contact info.

  2. We also need hay and feed (hay is needed much more than grain). These items are being collected at Double-M feed stores in New Orleans. People can purchase it at Jefferson Feed or Double-M. They will call us for pick-up.

Additional information:

  • Rescue Ranch is grooming, cleaning stalls, and monitoring care
of 26 of the 33 horses. Donations can be made to the Rescue Ranch via
mail to PO Box 7112, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, visiting their website , or
by calling Lori Wilson at 393-8485.

  • Farrier, Pete Uchello, has donated his services to trim all hooves, etc. Thank you, Pete!

  • The case is still under investigation and other charges are pending.

Update (8/1/07)

Seven of the horses are up for adoption!
