LA/SPCA Adoptable Animals Hit the Road
For a Second Chance at Finding Forever Homes

NEW ORLEANS (9/22/06) - A caravan of furry felines from the Louisiana SPCA hit the road this morning headed to Dallas on a one-way trip to find forever homes, with the help of the SPCA of Texas in Dallas.

Today, the LA/SPCA is transporting 34 adoptable cats, some that have been at their shelter since January. The SPCA of Texas currently has a very high adoption rate for cats and has welcomed the opportunity to place cats from New Orleans into waiting homes in Dallas.

“We’ve had difficulty finding homes for many of our adoptable cats and the SPCA of Texas, one of our primary disaster partners, has opened their doors to us giving adoptable felines a second chance at finding homes,” said Laura Maloney, Louisiana SPCA’s Executive Director. Maloney added, “Cats are particularly difficult to place since there are more of them then there are available homes.”

"The SPCA of Texas is happy to help place these wonderful cats," said James Bias, SPCA of Texas' President. "We're proud of our relationship with the Louisiana SPCA and will always be ready to offer any assistance we can. We know the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex will respond with open arms and give loving homes to these cats."

In the past month, the LA/SPCA transported 41 adoptable dogs to the Houston SPCA. Within a week, nearly all of the animals had been placed in homes. Similar caravans have also taken place with animals going to Maine’s Humane Society of Knox County and others traveling to various states in the Northeast through the volunteer organization Labs4Rescue.

Thus far 33 dogs have gone to the Humane Society of Knox County and all have been adopted. Labs4Rescue has received ten of our adoptable Labs and all of those have also been placed in homes. Maloney noted that, “People across the country have a desire to help New Orleans’ animals and they continue to welcome them into their homes and hearts. Until we can find more homes for our animals here in Louisiana, we will continue to work with our colleagues in giving homeless animals a second chance at getting adopted,” said Maloney.
