The Dorothy Dorsett Brown Humanitarian Award is presented each year at the LA/SPCA's Patron Party, Howling Success. It is awarded to an individual or an organization within the Greater New Orleans Area that exemplifies the humanitarianism and love for animals that defined Dorothy Dorsett Brown.
Dorothy Dorsett Brown (March 31, 1896-1989), along with her husband Joe W. Brown (October 5, 1897-1959) were dedicated to philanthropy during their lifetimes. The Browns moved to New Orleans in the mid-1920s. They both came from humble beginnings, but slowly acquired wealth through astute investments in real estate and oil properties.
The majority of the Browns' charitable endeavors during their lifetimes were anonymous with the exception of a shelter for the New Orleans SPCA [LA/SPCA] and the memorial recreation center in the Joe W. Brown Park. The gift of the recreation center also included the donation of the land to the City of New Orleans for the park and the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center.
The Brown Foundation was established in 1958 and is now highly involved in medical research, housing the homeless, support for organizations who care for the sick, hungry or helpless; religious and educational institutions; as well as organizations and groups concerned with improving our local community.
The Dorothy Dorsett Brown Humanitarian Award was first presented in 1995 by the LA/SPCA to Dorothy Dorsett Brown posthumously. The award was created as a way of honoring a great humanitarian and lover of animals, Dorothy Dorsett Brown, whose tireless commitment to improving the condition of animals lives on even after her death.
