Shelter not the only place to adopt a pet

Visiting an animal shelter can be an overwhelming experience for some. You may find yourself wanting to take every animal home, and although it's unrealistic, your heart breaks at the idea of not being able to do so. That is why satellite adoption centers and offsite adoption days play such a vital role in finding homes for animals.

Along with events held at venues such as Jefferson Feed Pet & Garden Center and Canine Connection, there are four satellite adoption centers where cat lovers can find wonderful cats and kittens from the Louisiana SPCA.

The Cat Practice and Magazine Street Animal Clinic, both in New Orleans; VCA Airline Animal Hospital in Metairie; and Heaven's Pets in New Orleans on Pontchartrain Boulevard all have a great selection of cats ready for adoption during each location's regular business hours.

These partners work closely with LA/SPCA staff liaison Heather Rigney, who trains the onsite staff in the adoption process. The satellite centers reach a clientele that may not visit the LA/SPCA shelter regularly, Rigney said.

"They may be afraid of a shelter environment, have a false perception of shelters or just find the experience difficult," she said.

Some cats up for adoption become a part of the staff while there, receiving lots of love and attention, which helps them to become well socialized and increases their chances for adoption.

There are six cats available for adoption among the four locations, including Mineaux and Scooter and VCA Airline Animal Hospital. Both age 7, these two cats remind me of my own two kitties in appearance and lovability. Mineaux is a tortie and Scooter is solid black. They are a winning combination, as are offsite adoption venues helping shelters find homes for animals.
