It's time to celebrate our bond with pets

The month of May signals a time of celebration on many fronts. For kids, it signals the school term coming to an end and the approach of summer break. For mothers, May brings that much-deserved day when families communicate how much they love and appreciate them.

There's one more celebratory event set aside during the month that promotes another key relationship in our lives that nurtures the soul as much as Mom's chicken soup. That's the celebration of our relationship with our pets.

Sunday through May 10 is National Pet Week. It was designated in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association as a time to celebrate the human-animal bond, promote responsible pet ownership and raise public awareness of veterinary medicine.

There are many ways that we can celebrate the week. My furred friends, who are looking over my shoulder as I write this column, said to remind my readers of the three-for-three rule they designed. It's the recommended daily dose of three hugs and three kisses per day, per pet, in case you're not familiar with it.

National Pet Week is also a good time to make sure that you're up to date on your pet's vaccinations and annual health checkups.

There's an event being held on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Heaven's Pets at Lake Lawn Metairie to honor the week, as well as find homes for adoptable pets from many area shelters and rescue groups. Hosted by Lake Lawn Metairie, the event will feature adoptable pets from the LA/SPCA, Looziana Basset Hound Rescue, Louisiana Boxer Rescue, Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue, Gulf South Golden Retriever Rescue, the St. Bernard Animal Shelter and Friends of the Jefferson Shelter.

Along with the chance to adopt wonderful companion animals in need of homes, the event will include a canine bomb-sniffing demonstration from the Jefferson Parish Police Department's canine unit and dog-training tips from Dave Lorch of Canine Refine.

Also on hand at the family outing will be Canine Connection, Petcetera, pet portrait artist Carole Legnon, pet nanny Anne Marie and Pet Asylum.

So in celebration of National Pet Week, let's all take a moment from our hectic lives to love our pets, who boost our spirits and our immune systems. Let's renew our vows to always provide them with the best care.

And also in the month of May, let's thank our moms for loving us, just because.
