Stay Out of My Garden!

One of the biggest complaints we receive at the shelter is concerning cats using someone's yard as a litter box. Below you will find some deterrents that can be used to discourage this aggravating practice.

Home Made Deterrents for Cats:

  • Grind up 3 garlic cloves and 4 chili peppers in a blender, put in a few drops of washing-up liquid and add to a bucket of water, stir well. Spray on the garden boundaries.

  • Mothballs or Aluminum Foil in the soil.

  • Cotton threads strung in a random pattern, three to four inches above the ground.

  • Ammonia

  • Orange and Lemon Peel (and Citronella Oil)

  • Ground up Black Pepper and Chili Pepper

  • Eggshells

Natural Deterrents:

Consider adding some of these plants to your landscape. Cats do not like them.

  • Pelargoniums

  • Petunias

  • Marigolds

  • Fuchsias

But stay away from these! They are plants that cats do like!

  • Thyme

  • Catnip

  • Ground Ivy

  • Evening Primrose
