What to do if...


...You see an animal in distress

Call the LA/SPCA: 504-368-5191. We have a dispatch officer on staff 24 hours per day. Your call will be responded, but because of the volume of calls we receive we may not call you back. Animals in distress are responded to immediately.

If your pet is in need of emergency care or any care outside of annual vaccinations please visit a veterinary clinic. For a list of clinic's in the area click here. The LA/SPCA is not equipped to provide care to your pet beyond basic annual examinations.

...You see a stray in your neighborhood

Orleans Parish
Call the LA/SPCA: 504-368-5191 ext 100. Typically, we will respond to a stray animal call within two weeks. If the animal is injured, please let us know. We will respond immediately to animals in distress. We have a dispatcher on staff 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, due to the volume of calls we receive we cannot always answer the phone. Leave a message with your information, and even if we can't call you back, we will respond to your call.

We take animals in 24 hours a day. If you have a friendly dog or cat you would like to bring to the shelter we will have someone here to accept him/her.

...You need to dispose of animal remains

In Orleans Parish, the sanitation contractor in your neighborhood can dispose of your pet's remains with the exception of Waste Management. For disposal of animals on Orleans Parish public roads notify the Orleans Parish Sanitation Department at 504-658-3800.

Richard's Disposal services a portion of Orleans Parish. For a map of their route please click here. The instructions for animal removal for Richard's are:

"Dogs, cats, and other small animals will only be collected from households and small businesses if the animal is put in a bag and brought to the curb for collection with solid waste. Richard's Disposal will not go on private property for collection of dead animals. If you notify Richard's Disposal of your need before 12pm they will remove the animal the same day."

The sanitation department handles the pick up of deceased animals in Jefferson Parish. Please call 504-736-6440 to schedule a pick up.

....You need cremation services for your pet

The LA/SPCA offers cremation for your pet. You will have peace of mind knowing your pet was treated humanely and compassionately in his/her last resting place. Unfortunately, the remains will not be returned to you. To schedule an appointment for this service please call 504-368-5191. The fee for this service is $#0.

Heaven's Pets provides total pet death care, cremation and bereavement services to anyone who has lost his or her pet.

...You have a wildlife issue

The LA/SPCA is not contracted to remove or accept any wildlife. Wildlife is considered to be any species that has not been domesticated. This includes racoons, possums, birds, snakes, foxes or coyotes. Please contact a Pest Control company or the Wildlife and Fisheries department to address any issues you may have with wildlife. Call 504-284-5269 to speak to the Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, and St. Charles representative for the Louisiana Department for Wildlife and Fisheries.
