Max

Max showed up at our house in June of 2005. He was a skinny guy with short hair, and had a scratchy meow like some kind of wild cat.

He became a part of the family instantly. I have this leather chair where I use to watch TV or read. For some reason, Max loved to sleep in that chair. He became quite skilled at "stealing" it away from me. Even when I'd get up for a second to grab a book, or the remote, or whatever. Even if I was out of it for 5 seconds, Max (if he was in the room) would sneak up there, and I'd find myself without a chair to sit in.

He also had a habit of getting up on the roof of the house. At night, I'd be upstairs in the media room on the computer, or laying down in bed. Then Max would be at the window. Standing on the roof, and meowing to be let inside. It was always such a pain for me to go outside, get a stepladder, and have to grab him from the edge of the roof. I couldn't help but do it, though. I was always afraid that if I didn't he'd fall off of the roof and hurt himself. I'd give anything to have to go and rescue him from the roof again.

Max actually taught himself to use the toilet. If the lid was up, he'd stand on the seat and actually pee in the toilet. We still had to flush for him, though (I have no doubt he would have done that too if he had the thumbs to make it happen).

My favorite memory of Max will always be when he'd sneak into my bedroom at night. I'd leave the door open just enough for him to come and go as he pleased. He used to like sleeping at the foot of my bed. Sometimes, he'd want to sleep on my legs. Other times, he'd wake up and start walking on me, or he'd stand near my face and try to wake me up. There were times when he'd get out of my bed and hop on the night stand. He'd walk around up there paying absolutely no regard to my watch, cell phone, wallet, etc.. as he knocked them to the carpet.

We found Max by the side of the road one week ago (on February 12, 2008) today. He and our other cats go in and out all the time. We've never seen them on or even close to the road before. Apparently, though, something on the road got Max's attention while he played outside on Monday night. I guess he couldn't get out of the way of whatever vehicle took his life.

We're all kicking ourselves for letting him out. We had done it plenty of times before, though, and there was no reason to think that the night he died would be any different. He'd be at the door in the morning, ready to sleep the day away. Well, not this time.

Max, we buried you under one of the big oak trees in the back yard. Even your three "sisters" were there as we told you goodbye. I can tell that they know something is wrong in the house, and I have no doubt that they miss you. The house just doesn't feel the same without you there.

As for me, I've never taken the loss of a pet so hard. You were such a great friend, and I'll never forget you. I miss you, Mr. Max. I love you. Rest in peace.

~ We'll never forget you, and will always love you.-Mom, Dad, Adam, Leigh,
and your "sisters' (Tache, Frankie, and Ming)
