We accept stray animals Monday – Saturday from 10 am – 5pm. If you find a stray after 5 pm, call 911 and ask the dispatcher to have an on-call officer meet you at our facility. Call 911 for animal emergencies & (504) 821-2222 for non-emergencies
Emergencies are responded to 24/7.

We’ve partnered with 911 provide better animal control support to Orleans Parish. Our Humane Law & Rescue team continues to respond to all animal control calls for service. This change allows us to better collaborate with emergency services like NOPD, NOFD and EMS. Emergencies are responded to 24/7 and non-emergencies Tuesday-Friday from 9 am – 5 pm due to the City of New Orleans’s budgetary shortfalls stemming from COVID-19.

Our first location was on Japonica Street, but was destroyed and deemed a total loss by Hurricane Katrina. We successfully evacuated 263 animals from the Japonica Street shelter for Hurricane Katrina. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and animal welfare colleagues, the organization led the largest animal rescue operation in the history of the United States. As a result, we worked out of a temporary shelter in a warehouse for a whole year during the aftermath of Katrina.

Adopting a pet is an amazing way to show love to an animal in need and brings so much love to you in return. There are plenty of animals in Louisiana that are in search of forever homes, but we hope you will find your new family member here at the Louisiana SPCA!

Did you know that we’re not affiliated with the ASPCA and rely on local donations?
